Who are we helping?

The core of our focus is on disadvantaged primary school children, most of whom speak English as a second (or third) language and who do not have the most basic of resources at home or in school. As a result they have almost no opportunity to develop their academic, sporting and social skills or simply to lead a happy, carefree childhood.

The children we support and work with represent the future of South Africa.

As a legacy of Apartheid and as an unfortunate but existing reality of this beautiful country, there are an enormous number of children living in conditions which present great challenges for life and learning on a daily basis.

In stark contrast to the beautiful surroundings of the Cape Winelands, large numbers of children live in shacks and sub-standard housing - with no running water, inside toilet facilities, safe electricity nor heating. The conditions and challenges our children must face every day include: extreme poverty, the social & economic impact of HIV/Aids & high unemployment, appalling lack of educational resources, illiteracy & lack of readily apparent successful role models; domestic violence, the lure of gangs - drugs - pressure to engage in sexual activity. Local schools are badly underresourced and teachers face the daunting task of educating children who come to school hungry, tired and damaged by the environment around them.

In spite of these challenges, with the sustained provision of basic educational resources & support, consistent reinforcement of positive life skills, and the creation of safe sporting & extracurricular opportunities, we & you can make an enormous contribution to the future of a child.

By engaging children at a foundation age, in conjunction with educators, average residents of the area, community workers and parents, we seek to improve essential core skills for life and offer viable alternatives to the activities which can destroy a child’s future and the hopes of a community. A fundamental objective is to stimulate these children’s minds and aspirations to a future beyond the shacks and poverty in which they now live – a brighter & healthier tomorrow!

A GREAT NATURAL RESOURCE: AMONG THE CHILDREN IN OUR PROGRAMS ARE FUTURE LEADERS, SCHOLARS, ATHLETES, ARTISTS, BUSINESSPEOPLE, COMMUNITY WORKERS, RESPONSIBLE PARENTS.
